Resistance forces seize junta arms cache in Myanmar
Resistance forces seized a cache of weapons from the Burmese junta after capturing a military base near the Thai border.
The Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) wrested control of the army encampment in Hpa-an city in Karen State, on March 27.
A search of the premises found a stockpile of firearms, including a .50mm machine gun with two scopes, an RPG-7 rocket launcher, and three MA-2 rifles. They also found assorted ammunition and dozens of grenades, bombs, and landmines, as well as power generators and a signal jammer.
Clashes have been ongoing along the Thai-Myanmar border near the province of Tak in northern Thailand in recent weeks.
On March 23, multiple blasts were heard in a remote forest as the Burmese junta bombed a KNLA base in the area. The airstrike was reportedly carried out in retaliation after the KNLA dropped drone bombs on a Myanmar military camp in the same region in early March.
The Royal Thai Air Force said it scrambled two fighter jets to patrol the airspace after a Burmese plan was detected flying close to Thai territory.
Around 110 Karen civilians — mostly women and children — fled across the border to seek refuge in Thailand. They crossed at a natural border point near Ban Mae Salit Luang village, where Thai authorities and local agencies provided them with security and humanitarian assistance.
Myanmar has fallen into civil war following the removal of democratically elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi, a Nobel Peace Prize winner, with a military coup in 2021.
Soldiers responded with barbaric force on protesting civilians leading to widespread condemnation and financial sanctions. Rebel groups and civilian militias around the country have since been locked in a series of ongoing clashes with the ruling military.
Aung San Suu Kyi has since been jailed for 33 years on politically motivated charges and is likely to die behind bars unless the army is toppled - a tragic end the politician hailed by Barack Obama as an 'inspirational icon of democracy'.
