At 2:20 p.m. Beijing time on March 28, a 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar at a depth of 30 kilometres.

Due to the high magnitude and close proximity, strong tremors were felt in Ruili, Yunnan. During the quake, chandeliers inside a jade market in Ruili swung violently, and people fled in panic toward the outdoors.
