Gaza Strip: UN reduces presence in Gaza following Israel's killing of UN personnel
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has made a difficult decision to reduce its humanitarian operations inside the Gaza Strip following the resumption of deadly Israeli airstrikes, a UN spokesman said on Monday. "In the past week, Israel carried out devastating strikes on Gaza, claiming the lives of hundreds of civilians, including United Nations personnel, with no humanitarian aid being allowed to enter the Strip since early March," said a statement released by Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for the Secretary-General. The UN has confirmed it will withdraw a third of its international staff from Gaza due to security concerns, affecting the operations of key agencies, including the World Food Programme, the World Health Organization, and UNICEF. The reduction, combined with Israel's continued blockade on aid, threatens the already fragile humanitarian response, leaving civilians increasingly vulnerable as Israeli airstrikes continue across the Strip. More than one million Palestinians in Gaza rely entirely on aid provided by UN agencies and any disruption to the assistance risks worsening hunger and the spread of disease among the population. A total of 855 people have been killed and 1,869 others wounded in the Gaza Strip since the Israeli military resumed intense airstrikes across the enclave on March 18, according to numbers released by the Gaza-based health authorities on Thursday.
