A powerful 7.9-magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar at around 12:50 local time on Friday, killing at least 10 people and causing significant damage to a number of buildings and roads in the Southeast Asian country. The quake hit at a depth of 30 kilometers, with the epicenter monitored at 21.85 degrees north latitude and 95.95 degrees east longitude, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center. Multiple structures in Myanmar's Mandalay Region collapsed, while several roads linking to the largest city of Yangon were also damaged or blocked, causing major transport disruption. Local reports stated that at least 10 people were killed when a mosque collapsed in Mandalay, while the walled fort of the Mandalay Palace also sustained damage. Myanmar's National Disaster Management Committee has declared a state of emergency across six regions in the country following the disaster. A 30-story-tall building which was under construction in the Thai capital collapsed, resulting in at least one death and leaving 43 others missing, with fears the death toll could rise. Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has announced a state of emergency in Bangkok following the quake.
