Temple roof and railway bridge collapse in northern Thailand during earthquake
Temples and bridges collapsed as a strong earthquake in Myanmar affected northern Thailand.
Video shows the railway bridge crushing a pickup truck parked underneath in Chiang Rai province, neighbouring Myanmar, on March 28.
Monks and devotees also fled as the tremors rocked a temple in the region.
Kritsachit Chomphu Daeng of the provincial disaster prevention office said: 'We received reports about the earthquake, but there was no significant damage recorded.
'In Chiang Rai Province, the affected areas were the Wat Tha Kham Si Don Chai temple, where the roof of the temple, made of terracotta, slid, but no one was injured.
'At the second location in Ban Pong Si Nakhon, a railway beam for collapsed and crushed cars and trucks belonging to officials who were working. No one was injured. Currently, data on damages is being collected.'
The US Geological Survey said the tremor struck at a depth of 10 kilometres (six miles), and was centred in Myanmar, around 50 kilometres (30 miles) east of Monywa.
Residents ran from their homes when they felt the tremors shortly after 1:20 pm local time. More than 1,700 people in the country have been killed and some 4,000, with rescue efforts ongoing.
The quake destroyed buildings, bridges, and dams, leaving many areas in ruins. Communication remains difficult as mobile networks are down, and access to electricity and the internet is limited.
In neighbouring Thailand, high-rise buildings shook and an apartment block under construction collapsed in Bangkok. At least 17 workers were killed.
