Iconic location of the last helicopter out of Saigon is still standing
Footage shows the iconic location of the last helicopter flight out of Saigon, where US officials fled the Vietcong.
Photographer Hubert van Es captured the iconic image of South Vietnamese boarding the CIA chopper on the roof of the apartment block on 29 April 1975.
Just a day later, the city fell to the Communist forces of the north, backed by China and Russia.
The building where the incident unfolded, formerly the Pittman Apartments, still stands, in a downtown part of Ho Chi Minh City.
It is surrounded by shopping malls, offices and apartments, partially obscuring the view. But some locals have placed signs on the roof identifying the location for curious tourists.
Hubert, who worked for UPI when he took the picture, said: 'Around 2:30 in the afternoon, while I was working in the darkroom, I suddenly heard Bert Okuley shout, 'Van Es, get out here, there's a chopper on that roof.
'I grabbed my camera and the longest lens left in the office - it was only 300 millimeters, but it would have to do - and dashed to the balcony. Looking at the Pittman Apartments, I could see 20 or 30 people on the roof, climbing the ladder to an Air America Huey helicopter.'
