Train passenger killed and dozens injured when coaches derail in India
A train passenger was killed and dozens more were injured when several coaches derailed in India.
The locomotive was traveling from Bangalore to Kamakhya when it went off track midway near Nergundi station in Cuttack, Odisha, on March 30.
Authorities reported that 11 coaches came off the tracks around 11:54 am during the journey.
Footage shows hundreds of stranded commuters on the tracks, waiting as officials arrange a substitute train while emergency responders recover the deceased's body from the vehicle.
Upon receiving reports of the incident, railway staff immediately arranged substitute trains to assist affected travelers.
East Coast Railway spokesperson Ashok Kumar Mishra said: 'Arrangements are being made to help the affected passengers reach their destinations. Our priority is to restore the line at the earliest, and accordingly, other trains will be diverted.'
Three trains have reportedly been rerouted following the derailment.
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has instructed officials to restore normal operations on the railway line.
He said: 'Deeply concerned about the derailment of Kamakhya Express near Nergundi station in Cuttack. Authorities are on-site, ensuring assistance and restoring normalcy at the earliest. Helplines activated for support.'
The Railways announced compensation of 500,000 INR (4,500 GBP) for the next of kin of the deceased, Rs 250,000 INR (2,250 GBP) for those with serious injuries, and 50,000 INR (450 GBP) for those with minor injuries.
The cause of the derailment remains under investigation.
On February 5, a freight train derailed and narrowly avoided crashing into homes, causing panic among residents in Rourkela, Odisha.
Three wagons came off the tracks, damaging a parked autorickshaw and a nearby shop.
Residents were alarmed when one of the carriages breached the wall of the railway yard and entered the residential area.
Authorities said that the driver is believed to have fled the scene. No injuries were reported.
On July 30 last year, 18 coaches of the Mumbai-Howrah Mail derailed near Jamshedpur in Jharkhand after colliding with a goods train, resulting in at least two fatalities.
The incident in Odisha comes nearly two years after the state witnessed one of India's deadliest train accidents, in which a collision between three trains killed almost 300 people and left over 1,000 injured.
The Commission of Railway Safety reported a rise in railway accidents, from 35 incidents in 2021 to 2022 to 48 incidents in 2022 to 2023, with serious incidents becoming increasingly frequent.
