A dust devil tornado picked a tent and sent it flying over a campsite.

Footage shows the strong winds sweeping up brown dirt as it tore through the spot before lifting a lightweight shelter high into the air in Phayao, Thailand.

The gust carried the tent on a swirling motion before it crashed back to the ground 40ft (12m) away.

Campers watched from the other side of the field as the weather phenomenon unfolded on February 10.

Kwiwath said: 'I was recording a video of the military training camp for second-year students when the tornado lifted tents.'

Dust devil tornadoes are types of whirlwinds that form when the sun heats a patch of land and the air above becomes warmer and rises quickly.

Cooler air then moves into the low-pressure gap left by the rising warm air. The new drafts of cooler air also heat up and rise and the cycle continues, picking up dust and debris and making the spiral visible.

They are not as dangerous as supercell tornadoes, which can cause severe damage.
