An illegal gas supply caused an explosion that ripped through shops in Russia.

The incident occurred in Makhachkala, Dagestan, on Tuesday, March 25.

Footage captured in a car park in front of the building shows the moment of the blast, starting with a sudden loud bang. A flash of light can also be seen as the flat was blasted into pieces, followed by vehicles in the parking area being showered in glass and debris from the building.

As smoke quickly fills the air, car alarms can be heard going off after being hit by the shockwave.

Locals are seen inspecting the damage as the video clip ends.

Two people were injured in the incident.

The Ministry of Emergency Situations said the building is too damaged to repair and will be torn down, with 86 workers and 24 vehicles currently on-site.

Reports indicated that an illegal gas supply caused the explosion in one of the flats, which is believed to have been improperly installed. It remains unclear whether any arrests have been made.
