This is the heartwarming moment locals cheered when a teenage girl was pulled from the rubble of a collapsed building following the earthquake in Myanmar.

Footage shows firemen cutting through the debris and reaching inside to drag the youngster to safety in Mandalay on March 30.

She was relatively unscathed despite spending more than 48 hours trapped after the magnitude 7.7 earthquake on March 28.

Officials took her for medical treatment before she was reunited with relatives.

Rescue worker Thet Oo said: 'After working nonstop for two nights and three days, all our exhaustion melted away when we finally succeeded. The team from Nanda Metta Organization shouted, cheered, and jumped for joy.

'The young girl was trapped in a narrow gap between a concrete pillar and a bed frame, barely enough space for a single person. Due to a lack of proper rescue equipment, we had to use crowbars, hammers, and sledgehammers to break through and clear a path.

'When we finally managed to pull the girl out alive, all our tiredness instantly vanished.

'Once outside, she burst into tears of joy. And honestly, we were so overwhelmed with happiness that we cried too.'

The US Geological Survey said the tremor struck at a depth of 10 kilometres (six miles), and was centred in Myanmar, around 50 kilometres (30 miles) east of Monywa, along the Sagaing fault.

Residents ran from their homes when they felt the tremors shortly after 1:20 pm local time. More than 2,000 people in the country have been killed and some 4,000, with rescue efforts ongoing.

The quake destroyed buildings, bridges, and dams, leaving many areas in ruins. Communication remains difficult as mobile networks are down, and access to electricity and the internet is limited.

In neighbouring Thailand, high-rise buildings shook and an apartment block under construction collapsed in Bangkok. At least 17 workers were killed.
