Two monkeys cruise on motorcycle sidecar with owner
Two monkeys were spotted cruising on a motorcycle sidecar with their owner.
The farmers, accompanied by the pig-tailed macaques, were seen on their way to a coconut plantation for harvesting in Bangkok, Thailand on March 23.
Footage shows one of the primates perched on the vehicle's sidecar while the other sits on the rider's lap.
The filmer said: 'They are used for collecting coconuts, which I know is controversial, but the monkeys looked so cool cruising on the roads.'
Thailand is among the world's leading exporters of coconuts. In 2023, the country was the top exporter of fresh or dried coconuts, with exports valued at approximately 453.7 million USD and totaling around 653 million kilograms.
The Asia branch of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) reported that Thai farmers still use monkey labor to meet international coconut demands.
PETA has documented the harsh treatment of pig-tailed macaques trained to pick coconuts. Many are illegally taken from the wild as babies, kept in chains, and confined to tiny cages when not working.
In 2019, PETA investigators found distressed monkeys pacing and screaming, some with their canine teeth removed to prevent injuries to handlers.
Pig-tailed macaques are protected under Thailand's Wildlife Conservation and Protection Act B.E. 2562, which prohibits their removal from the wild, trade, and possession without proper permits. Violators face fines or imprisonment.
