Uprooted tree kills three worshippers during Eid prayers in Indonesia
An uprooted tree killed at least three worshippers during Eid prayers in Indonesia.
Thousands of followers gathered at the Nurul Kalam Grand Mosque in Pemalang Regency, Central Java, to perform Eid prayers.
While preparing for the ritual, locals reportedly heard a thunderous sound outside, followed by the collapse of a banyan tree around 6:20 am on Monday morning, March 31,
Authorities said dozens of individuals who were sitting under the massive tree while waiting for the event to start were struck. Three worshippers died, and 15 others were injured, with one in critical condition.
Pemalang Regent Anom Widiyantoro said: 'It is suspected that the tree collapsed due to its old and fragile condition.'
Footage shows locals gathering around the scene, with the tree still lying in the area. A woman was seen bleeding from her head and neck while being assisted by a fellow devotee.
After evacuating the victims, the Pemalang Police Criminal Investigation Unit was deployed to the location to conduct a crime scene investigation.
Eid prayers are a special set of prayers performed by Muslims on Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, two significant religious holidays in Islam. These prayers are typically held in congregation and serve as a way for Muslims to express gratitude to Allah after the fasting month of Ramadan during Eid al-Fitr, or to commemorate the willingness of Abraham to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to Allah during Eid al-Adha.
