Firefighters burst into applause as Myanmar earthquake survivor is rescued from collapsed hotel
This is the heartwarming moment firefighters burst into applause as an earthquake survivor was successfully rescued from a collapsed hotel in Myanmar.
Footage shows the rescue officers hoisting the injured man out of a hole in the crumbled Hotel Aye Chan Thar in Naypyidaw, in the early hours of April 2.
Cheers erupted as he was lifted out of the rubble. He was then strapped onto a rescue board to be rushed to a hospital.
The Myanmar Fire Services Department said: 'On the fifth day after the earthquake, one of the two people trapped in the lower two floors of the six-storey Hotel Aye Chan Thar building in Ottarathiri Township, Nay Pyi Taw, was rescued alive at 00:30 on April 2.'
The US Geological Survey said the magnitude 7.7 tremor struck at a depth of 10 kilometres (six miles), and was centred in Myanmar, around 50 kilometres (30 miles) east of Monywa, along the Sagaing fault.
Residents ran from their homes when they felt the tremors shortly after 1:20 pm local time on March 28. More than 2,700 people in the country have been killed and some 4,500 injured, with the figures expected to rise.
The quake destroyed buildings, bridges, and dams, leaving many areas in ruins. Communication remains difficult as mobile networks are down, and access to electricity and the internet is limited.
In neighbouring Thailand, high-rise buildings shook and an apartment block under construction collapsed in Bangkok. At least 22 people were killed.
