This is the terrifying moment a raging grassfire ripped through a volcano island in the Philippines.

Footage shows the blaze, fanned by strong winds, engulfing swathes of the Taal Volcano island in Batangas province, on April 1.

State seismological agency PHIVOLCS said the flames broke out at around 11:24 am on Tuesday, and affected monitoring equipment at one of their observation stations.

PHIVOLCS director Teresito Bacolcol said the cause of the fire was under investigation. He said: 'We can't say for sure, but definitely, it's not due to the activity of Taal Volcano.'

The local fire department, disaster management office, and coast guards responded to the fire, which was extinguished at 9:05 am today, April 2. Fire officials said no injuries were reported.

Taal has been under Alert Level 1 since 2022, making the volcano island a permanent danger zone.

The Philippines is an archipelago of more than 7,000 islands inside the Pacific 'Ring of Fire' where the majority of Earth's volcano eruptions and earthquakes happen.
