The senior diplomat conveyed particular apprehension regarding certain political maneuvers by Republika Srpska's leadership that appear to contravene constitutional norms. In discussions with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, Lammy articulated the United Kingdom's perspective on Serbia's pivotal role in safeguarding regional security. The Foreign Secretary reflected on the longstanding historical ties between the two nations, noting Belgrade's alliance with Britain during both global conflicts of the twentieth century. Lammy reaffirmed London's commitment to enhancing cooperation with Balkan states and facilitating their integration with European institutions, while acknowledging existing geopolitical complexities that complicate these efforts. The discussions notably addressed concerns about political developments in Bosnia and Herzegovina, with Lammy characterizing certain actions as inconsistent with constitutional frameworks. The dialogue also touched upon the stalled normalization process between Belgrade and Pristina, with both sides recognizing the necessity of renewed diplomatic engagement. Addressing domestic developments in Serbia, Lammy expressed sympathy regarding recent civil unrest following a tragic event in Novi Sad, emphasizing the principle of non-interference in sovereign nations' internal affairs. The visit concluded with the signing of memoranda of understanding on economic cooperation between the Serbian government and the UK’s Department for Business and Trade, security collaboration between Serbia’s Interior Ministry and the UK Home Office to combat organized crime in migration, and digital and telecommunications partnership between Serbia’s Ministry of Information and the UK Foreign Office. Lammy stated that these agreements would help disrupt human smuggling networks and boost economic ties, with potential investments reaching £4 billion.
