This is the astonishing moment a boy and his auntie were found alive after spending six nights trapped in a home that collapsed during an earthquake.

The infant and his relative were at home in the living room when the magnitude 7.7 struck Myanmar on March 28. His mother and father were both at work in nearby fields.

Footage shows how the pair were trapped under the debris of the felled home in Mandalay.

But miraculously, a teak wood cupboard that fell on top of them protected them from falling chunks of concrete.

They remained stuck in the rubble without food or water before rescue teams finally reached them on April 4, carrying the boy out and reuniting him with his parents. The auntie followed shortly after.

Volunteer Zaw, from the Mani Sa La humanitarian aid group, said: 'The three-year-old child was rescued alive from under the collapsed six-story building.

'Rescue teams discovered the child and their aunt pinned under a wardrobe in the collapsed building.

Both were successfully rescued later that evening by the Mani Sa La team, which helped extract them and took them for treatment.

'At the time of the earthquake, the child's parents were outside. They were both present during the rescue.'

The US Geological Survey said the magnitude 7.7 tremor struck at a depth of 10 kilometres (six miles), and was centred in Myanmar, around 50 kilometres (30 miles) east of Monywa, along the Sagaing fault.

Residents ran from their homes when they felt the tremors shortly after 1:20 pm local time on March 28. More than 4,000 people in the country have been killed, with the figure expected to rise.

The quake destroyed buildings, bridges, and dams, leaving many areas in ruins. Communication remains difficult as mobile networks are down, and access to electricity and the internet is limited.

Rescue teams from Communist China - a close ally of the Burmese junta - have been working alongside locals in Myanmar, or Burma, to provide relief from the disaster.

American teams have been delayed by issues with sanctions on the war-torn country and problems obtaining visas.

US officials are said to have claimed that the American absence shows how President Donald Trump's moves to slash the size of the US government have reduced its ability to act during disasters.

In neighbouring Thailand, high-rise buildings shook and an apartment block under construction collapsed in Bangkok. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration said at least 22 people were killed, with more than 70 still missing.
