Explosion as house goes up in flames following blaze in garage
A house went up in flames following a massive explosion which sent a fireball into the sky.
The blaze began in detached garage before spreading to a home and surrounding trees in Shawnee, Kansas.
Michael Basler, 36, captured dramatic footage of the blaze and eruption at his neighbor's home, in the 6200 block of King Street.
He speculated it involved aerosol cans or bullets - after hearing "pops" during the fire which began around 11:20 p.m. on March 27, "
The Shawnee Fire Department responded to a fire.
No injuries were reported, and the cause remains under investigation, according to the fire department.
Michael, a trade development manager was in bed watching TV when he noticed the smell and taste of smoke. Initially thinking it was from his own kitchen, he checked his stove but found nothing unusual.
Moments later, he heard a rapid series of pops outside.
"Pop, pop, pop, pop," he recalled. "I thought, holy shit—maybe there's a shootout, or one of my neighbors got killed."
Pulling back his blackout curtains, he saw a bright glow behind a house across the street. Stepping outside, he was met with thick smoke and flashing emergency lights.
A police officer banged on the homeowner's door, urging him to evacuate, and he ran out from the side of the house, yelling that he was safe, Michael said.
As firefighters battled the blaze, Basler recorded the moment an explosion erupted.
"The second I turn my camera, it just goes boom," he said. "The fireball climbed higher than the trees. It looked like it even hit the firefighters."
One firefighter removed his helmet in disbelief, seemingly checking himself for injuries.
By the next morning, the extent of the damage was clear. Basler saw three vehicles at the scene, two with fire damage. A white SUV's hood had been blown back against the windshield.
Speculation arose about the explosion's cause — some suggested overheated spray paint cans, others wondered if bullets had ignited in the fire.
Days later, Basler was still in shock.
"It was insane, man," he said. "Just something I never expected to see, let alone capture on video."
