A hungry wild elephant checked passing trucks for food on a forest road in Thailand.

Footage shows the jumbo ambling along the path and approaching the vehicles one by one in Chachoengsao province on April 4.

It pulled away and let the drivers leave when it found nothing edible in the cars.

Onlooker Tanawet said: 'The elephant searched the cars for food. It wasn't aggressive and just hungry.'

Thailand has up to 3,500 elephants in the wild. The population has been increasing in recent years, but it is still a fraction of the estimated 300,000 wild elephants that lived in the country at the beginning of the 20th century.

The main threats to wild elephants in Thailand are habitat loss and fragmentation, poaching, and conflict with humans.
