Israeli airstrikes hit Gaza school sheltering displaced families, killing over 30
Storyline: At least 31 people, including women and children, were killed in consecutive Israeli airstrikes on Thursday targeting a private school in east of Gaza City, where hundreds of displaced Palestinians had sought refuge, according to local authorities. The Deir Al-Arqam school, which was housing around 1,200 displaced people -- including 300 children -- was struck twice within hours, reducing the building to rubble. An eyewitness, Nael Al-Samman, emphasized that the area was a designated playground and learning center for children, denying any military presence. "This area is designated for children's swings and playgrounds. It is entirely a play area and a children's learning center. There are no housing, military barracks or armed forces here," he said. Ahmed Dababeesh, a survivor, recounted the horrific aftermath while wearing a blood-stained shirt. Gaza Civil Defense spokesman Mahmoud Basal said that rescue teams were continuing to search for missing victims beneath the wreckage. On Thursday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) claimed in a statement that it struck prominent militants in a Hamas command and control center in the area of Gaza City. The center had been used by the militants to plan and execute attacks against Israeli civilians and IDF troops, according to the statement. Israel ended a two-month ceasefire on March 18 and resumed deadly air and ground assaults on the Palestinian enclave. The renewed Israeli attacks have so far killed 1,249 Palestinians and injured 3,022 others, Gaza health authorities said on Friday. The Palestinian death toll in the Gaza Strip has risen to 50,609, with 115,063 injured, following nearly 18 months of Israeli military operations since October 7, 2023, said Gaza health authorities on Friday.
