Sweden: Stockholm protesters denounce Trump’s proposal to move Gazans
STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN - APRIL 5, 2025: Hundreds of protesters in the Swedish capital, Stockholm, rallied on Saturday, April 5, against the US President Trump's proposal to forcibly relocate Palestinians from Gaza to neighboring countries. Chanting pro-Palestinian slogans and holding banners, the protesters marched from the Odenplan area to the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs building. Swedish activist Pelle Ericsson, who participated in the protest, expressed his outrage, stating, "What we are witnessing is one of the worst genocides of modern times. I have to be here because what is happening is totally crazy. We have a Swedish government, you can say, almost ran by a neo-Nazi party, and we have a foreign minister who goes to Israel to visit their government. I haven’t seen anything like this in Sweden before." Ericsson went on to criticize Sweden’s leadership, saying, "This government is such a coward and so totally without empathy for people. That’s why I’m here. There has to be change." He also pointed out the failure of international powers to act, saying, "People are protesting across Europe, in the U.S., and worldwide. But it seems like it doesn’t matter at the moment. Palestinians are still being killed every day in dozens, mainly women and children" The activist concluded by warning of broader implications: "Of course, it’s genocide. Many countries in Europe are afraid to speak out. They don’t want to go against Israel or the United States— particularly the U.S. I also believe that if the European Union, including major countries like Sweden, had acted in another way, things might have been very different. It's a shame to live in Sweden and see how the government is acting. This issue isn’t just about Palestine — it's about what happens after Palestine. Which country will be next for genocide? I don’t know, but it’s clear that we have a fascist-influenced government in Sweden right now." Israel resumed its attacks in Gaza on March 18, shattering a two-month truce. More than 50,600 Palestinians have been killed in the enclave in Israel's ongoing genocide since October 2023, most of them women and children. The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants last November for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave. Reporting by Atila Altuntas // Writing by Ayse Elif Erdis
