NAIROBI, KENYA - MARCH 26, 2025: As the world prepares to mark the International Day of Zero Waste on March 30, residents of Nairobi’s Kuwinda slum took matters into their own hands Tuesday, collecting plastic waste in an effort to combat pollution and raise awareness about the mounting global waste crisis. The effort, supported by local environmental groups, reflects growing concerns over waste management and the urgent need to promote sustainable consumption and production practices. Every year, between 2.1 billion and 2.3 billion tons of municipal solid waste are generated worldwide, putting immense pressure on the environment and waste management systems. As communities take action ahead of Zero Waste Day, the initiative serves as a reminder of the role both local efforts and systemic change play in building a more sustainable future.
