A train derailed in Indianapolis, spilling corn starch across the tracks.

The Indianapolis Fire Department (IFD) crews were dispatched to Southeastern Avenue and Earhart Street around 6:30 pm on Sunday, April 6, after reports of a train fire.

While travelling to the scene, they learned the coach was not burning but had derailed with spilled white powder on the road.

IFD confirmed that six train cars had fallen off the railway tracks. First responders reported that four cars were empty, and two had spilled a substance identified as corn starch.

Cleanup was expected to last until Monday afternoon, and the police closed Southeastern Avenue between Prospect Street and South Sherman Drive, allowing emergency responders and cleanup crews to work without interference and preventing potential hazards.

CSX is also aiding the operation with heavy machinery to address the crash properly.

Officers reported no crew injuries and no threat to community safety. The cause of the derailment is under investigation.

The Indianapolis Department of Public Works and the Indiana Department of Transportation will assess the damage to the overpass bridge, which did not collapse.

Full cleanup and restoration could take days, with no exact timeline provided.
