The Sakurajima volcano erupted, sending a plume of ash 2,900 metres above the crater in Japan.

Dramatic footage shows the volcano releasing ash clouds on Monday, April 7, from 11:48 am onwards.

Authorities issued warnings to nearby areas, advising residents to stay indoors and avoid ash fallout.

No immediate injuries were reported, but officials remained alert, as the eruption marked the 56th of the year. The outburst also disrupted local air travel.

Sakurajima is one of Japan's most active volcanoes, with a history of frequent eruptions. Originally an island, it became a peninsula after a significant eruption in 1914.

Japan lies along the Pacific 'Ring of Fire' where the majority of Earth's volcano eruptions and earthquakes happen.
