The race took place at the Circuit de Dakar Baobabs in Sindia, about 60 kilometers from Dakar, and featured small-engine motorcycles commonly used for daily transport. The race called the "Abdul Hadi Fattah Grand Prix", was organized by the Horizon Riders Club (HRC) and brought together over 250 motorcycle taxis. A total of 400 riders competed in 10 categories based on engine size on the international standard 2-kilometre track. These motorcycles gained popularity in West Africa in the 1980s, with Senegal importing them from Indonesia, earning them the nickname 'Jakarta'. In other countries, similar vehicles are known by different names, such as "Zemidjan" in Benin or "Kabou kabou" in Niger. Jakarta taxis have become a vital mode of transport in cities where public transport systems are lacking, providing a fast and affordable option. However, their widespread use without proper licensing or safety equipment poses serious risks, as many are unregistered due to their small engine size. The Senegalese government has tried to introduce a registration system for two-wheelers, but riders have resisted because of the cost of training, which can be as much as $300. Senegal records around 27,000 road accidents a year, of which 700 are fatal, mainly due to driver error and poor infrastructure.
