Ferring, United Kingdom - January 14, 2025 A CCTV camera has captured children misusing a level crossing, risking their lives. The footage shows dangerous behavior near Goring-by-Sea, including one person urinating on the railway. Trains speed through at up to 70mph, and several near-misses have been reported. Railway staff noted incidents of people walking or playing on the tracks at Clappers Lane. Network Rail has acted by temporarily closing the crossing. Extra signage, cameras, and education events were tried, but misuse continued, leading to this decision. The electric third rail, always powered, carries deadly voltage. Fast trains and slippery conditions add to the risk of severe injury or death. In January, four incidents occurred. On 14 January, a signaller saw someone run across as a train neared. Similar close calls happened on 13, 12, and 6 January. Stuart Tautz from Network Rail stressed educating people about safety. Talks with local schools aim to warn kids and parents of the lethal risks. Plans for warning lights are in discussion, but deliberate misuse may require stronger steps. Lucy McAuliffe, Sussex route director, noted 22 incidents since 2019. She thanked West Sussex County Council for supporting the closure. Cameras watch the site, but constant monitoring isn’t in place, so personal caution is urged. The video release follows a campaign showing over 55% of South East residents don’t know about the electric rail’s danger.
