Firefighters protested in Madrid over work conditions.

Demonstrators demanded better working conditions and an end to years of neglect by Tragsa, a public company in Spain.

Footage shows enraged workers in full fire gear gathered outside the company's headquarters on April 9.

They chanted loudly as four demonstrators used poles to fan flames from a burning box in the middle of the road.

The group condemned what they called an ‘unsustainable' employment situation. They demanded a new collective bargaining agreement to replace the one that expired in 2012, reduce temporary contracts, and improve risk assessments.

Jesus Molina, a Works Council member, said he earns just 1,253 euros monthly, an amount he says is insufficient to live decently in Madrid today.

He added: 'We protect citizens and the environment. We deserve dignity.'

Tragsa said that the agreement is sector-specific and applies only to Madrid's Forest firefighters, claiming it can only negotiate its own terms, not sector-wide deals.

Temporary employment affects 40 percent of the workforce, with many working just four months yearly, prompting insecurity among trained firefighters and leading to wasteful resource management.

The protesters also demanded an occupational risk plan targeting carcinogens from smoke exposure.

They further called for recognition of their professional roles and the implementation of Law 5/2024.

The demonstration aimed to force a meeting with Tragsa's president, Jesús Casas Grande, following failed talks with the Madrid 112 Emergency Agency.
