Police used boats to navigate flooded streets in Kentucky following days of relentless rain across the region.

Dramatic footage taken from a small watercraft by the Louisville Metro Police Department shows inundated roads and submerged structures on April 9.

The Kentucky National Guard said: 'Our River Unit and Dive Team showing us the sights from Waterfront Park down River Road and Witherspoon areas.'

Officials deployed 350 soldiers and airmen to conduct rescue operations and reach stranded individuals.

The death toll from severe flooding across Kentucky was now believed to be six.

Governor Andy Beshear said: 'Four days of severe storms have brought devastation to communities across the Commonwealth. I want to thank all of our first responders and volunteers, both locally and from out of state, who have dedicated time to help our people.

'While the threat of severe storms has ended, several rivers and creeks remain at or above flood stage, and roadways remain underwater in several areas. So we need folks to remain cautious.'

The freak weather began on Wednesday, dumping heavy rainfall across the state for several days, swelling rivers and inundating highways.
