Chinese students arrested over 'illegal beauty salon' in Thailand
Two Chinese students were arrested for working illegally at a beauty salon in Thailand.
Police stormed the establishment in popular tourist hotspot Pattaya amid a crackdown on unauthorised foreign workers in the country.
They found Wan, 41, and Zhu, 23, offering beauty treatments to customers despite only holding student visas. The occupation is also reserved for Thai natives.
The pair were unable to produce valid work permits and were detained on April 10.
Police Colonel Man Rodthong of the Tourist Police said: 'We informed the suspects of their charges and rights and allowed them to contact their relatives or those related to them. They were taken to the inquiry officer for further legal action.'
Under Thailand's Foreign Employment Act, tourists are banned from working in dozens of occupations including tour guiding, labour work, agriculture, and hairdressing.
Violators may be fined 5,000 to 50,000 THB and may face deportation to their home country. They will also be banned from seeking a Thai work permit for two years.
