Argentina: An Argentine province implements the world's first jaguar protection insurance
Argentina - January 17, 2024 The Government of Misiones took a momentous step in biodiversity conservation. This Wednesday, the Province presented the implementation of the world's first Jaguar Depredation Insurance. This innovative public policy seeks to harmonize livestock production with the preservation of this emblematic species, which is in danger of extinction in the Paraná rainforest. The initiative, far from opposing production and conservation, reflects Misiones' commitment to sustainable territorial development. The insurance protects natural heritage and strengthens the productive security of livestock families. Designed in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Río Uruguay Seguros (RUS), with the support of ministries and the Misiones Biodiversity Institute (IMiBio), the insurance articulates biodiversity protection with rural development and public-private cooperation.
