Storyline: Trade unions in Argentina staged a 24-hour nationwide general strike on Thursday, which marked the third general strike in protest against the austerity measures of President Javier Milei since he took office in December 2023. Milei government's symbolic "chainsaw" economic plan, aiming at cutting public spending to bring down the country's fiscal deficit, has degraded workers living conditions, according to the unions. As the strike went on, trains and ports in the country were at a halt on Thursday, and hundreds of flights were canceled. In addition, as part of this week's strike action, workers mobilized on Wednesday to support retirees, one of the hardest-hit groups under Milei's policies. The protesters also expressed their concerns over the tariff cuts amid the global economic turmoil, worrying that the policy will lead to a foreign product influx, causing devastating impacts on local industries. The government criticized this week's strike. During his Wednesday trip to Paraguay, Milei reiterated his vision to restructure the economy and the state. The IMF announced on Tuesday that it has reached a preliminary agreement with Argentina on a 20-billion-dollar bailout, which the president expects to fund his plan to reorganize the country's economic order. As soon as this government took office, they lowered tariffs and started importing more. There are a lot more imported products now and that is hurting our national industry."
