Iranian authorities announced that Monday, March 31, will be the first day of Eid al-Fitr, based on astronomical calculations confirming that Saturday was the 28th day of Ramadan. The crescent moon, signaling the end of Ramadan, was not sighted in Iran and several other countries, including Malaysia, Australia, Bangladesh, Indonesia, India, and Brunei, on Saturday night. The new moon is expected to be visible to the naked eye on Sunday evening, confirming the start of Shawwal (10th month of the Islamic calendar)and the joyous occasion of Eid al-Fitr. Eid al-Fitr, a festival of breaking the fast at the end of the holy month of Ramadan, is the first of the two main festivals in Islam, the other being Eid al-Adha.
