Omdurman, Sudan - April 13, 2025 One of the defining aspects of the war in Sudan between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces has been the rampant looting of civilian property. Armed RSF fighters roam the streets, seizing vehicles at gunpoint. In many neighborhoods, abandoned cars are stripped for parts—left behind by families fleeing the horror of war. In response, the Sudanese government has established open lots to collect these destroyed, burnt, or stolen vehicles from major roads. Here, citizens come searching, hoping to find what’s left of their cars. Among them is a man looking for four vehicles that were taken from him by RSF forces. He recounts the day it happened: he and his relatives had driven to the hospital to visit his sister and her son—both fatally shot by RSF fighters. It took them four days to bury their loved ones. On their way back from the cemetery, their vehicles were gone. His story is just one among thousands. Authorities report a flood of electronic complaints from citizens whose cars have vanished. Meanwhile, media outlets reveal that some of these stolen vehicles have appeared for sale across borders—in markets in Chad and South Sudan.
