DEMOLISHED BUILDIGNSHAMA, SYRIA - APR. 13, 2025: Displaced civilians living in camps across northern Syria have begun returning to their villages in coordination with local civil society organizations. After years of displacement due to conflict and bombardment, families from Atmeh camps have begun returning to their villages in northern Hama, many for the first time in more than a decade. Despite widespread destruction, many have set up tents on the ruins of their homes. Qasem al-Qasem, who returned to his village in rural Hama, said they had endured harsh conditions while living in tents for 14 years and that their joy of returning was beyond words. However, he added that the joy was bittersweet. “Our village is in ruins,” he said. “There are no livable houses, no infrastructure, no schools, no health centers.” Abdullah Suleiman, another returnee, said, “We stayed in camps for 10 years. We grew tired of the hardships of displacement. We came back to our homeland because even setting up a tent on our own land is better.”
