Ecuador: Daniel Noboa elected president of Ecuador
Daniel Noboa, the incumbent president of Ecuador, was re-elected in the second round of the presidential election held Sunday for a four-year term, according to the initial results released by the National Electoral Council. In the first round of the presidential election held in February, Noboa, candidate of the National Democratic Action, held a narrow lead but not enough to avoid another duel against the candidate of the Citizen Revolution Movement, Luisa Gonzalez, who is bidding to become Ecuador's first female president. According to Ecuador's constitution, every citizen between 18 and 65 is obliged to vote, which counts for roughly 13.7 million. Over 83 percent of the eligible voters across the country voted in the second round of the presidential election, higher than the first round, with 92 percent of the votes valid, statistics from the electoral council showed. The most concerned topics during the election are safety, anti-corruption and health, according to voters. "(Ecuador) is one of the most dangerous countries in the world, so it is important to address the problem," said Ecuadorian Rafael Castellanos Guevara at a polling station. "From my perspective, health and safety are the most important issues. No matter which of the candidates wins, the new president should focus on people's health and safety," said Cecilia Guerrero, a local resident. "What I care about most is the change of our country, because we want to change the situation of corruption," said Maria Emilia Herrera, another voter. To ensure the smooth holding of the elections, the Ecuadorian government deployed around 100,000 military and police officers nationwide to maintain order, with 92,000 representatives from various political parties assisting at polling stations. Nearly 1,000 domestic and international observers were invited to jointly oversee the voting process to ensure fairness and transparency. SHOTLIST: Quito, Ecuador - April 13, 2025 1.
