Gaza Strip: Israeli hits last fully functional hospital in Gaza
An Israeli strike on Sunday has hit Al-Ahli Arab Baptist Hospital, the last fully functional hospital in Gaza City, with 200 Palestinian patients and injured forced to leave the buildings. According to health officials at the hospital, a child was pronounced dead shortly after he was evacuated when they had to take the oxygen from him as he was being hospitalized at the intensive care unit. Munir Al-Barsh, Director General of the Palestinian Ministry of Health, criticized the failure of international law to protect medical facilities and described the situation as a "health disaster." "By forcing this hospital of service, the Israeli occupation is killing hope and life for the people. International law, which was supposed to protect these institutions, has completely failed to deter or stop the occupation’s attacks on hospitals. In truth, we are facing a health disaster in every sense of the word," he said. The attack struck the hospital's surgical operations department and an oxygen generation unit, inflicting severe damage across multiple sections of the facility. "There are still a significant number of patients here that need surgeries, little kids, women and children with open wounds, exposed bones, and they need a lot of work. Unfortunately, our ability to take care of these patients is significantly impaired," said Samer Attar, a volunteer doctor. "Some of the patients ended up in the street, while others remained inside the hospital, unable to escape. Some because they didn't have family members accompanying them couldn't run due to their medical condition, that was my case. I honestly thought I was going to die that night because we didn't know which part of the hospital they would target. We were shocked when they bombed the reception area, the blood bank, and even the pharmacy where we get our medication," Mohammed Abu Nasser, a wounded patient, recounted the chaos and fear during the attack. This is not the first time that this hospital is hit. In the early weeks of the Israeli war, the hospital was hit massively, leading to the death of almost 500 displaced Palestinians in the beginning of the war. According to health officials, nearly 34 hospitals in Gaza have been completely or partially destroyed by Israeli airstrikes all over the war in the the past one year and a half. The health authorities in Gaza reported on Sunday that the Palestinian death toll since the start of the conflict on October 7, 2023, has reached 50,944, with 116,156 wounded. They noted 11 deaths and 111 injuries in the past 24 hours, adding that rescue efforts continue to be hampered by ongoing hostilities. SHOTLIST: Gaza Strip - April 13, 2025 1.
