US officials are banning some forms of animal testing after undercover investigators found this horrifying animal testing at a pharmaceutical laboratory in Indiana.

Footage shows officers raiding the Inotiv testing facility where more than 6,000 animals were being kept.

One of the dogs, a dying beagle named Riley, was captured 'hypersalivating, trembling, vomiting and moaning on the floor, unable to stand' after being given a toxic drug. He was euthanised the following day.

Following the investigation, which took place in 2022, the US Food and Drug Administration on April 10 announced the decision to phase out animal testing for certain biologics and drugs.

Kitty Block, president and CEO of non-profit org Humane World for Animals, said: 'We're thrilled to see the FDA take this important step to phase out animal testing for certain therapies and drugs.

'This dramatic shift in direction will spare countless animals from suffering while encouraging faster, more reliable and safe drug development that helps people. It's proof that compassion and cutting-edge science can—and should—go hand in hand.'

New methods such as organ-on-a-chip, 3D bioprinting, artificial intelligence, and advanced cell models will instead be used over traditional animal testing.

Sara Amundson, president of Humane World Action Fund, said: 'FDA and EPA have been pressed for decades to champion innovative methods that use human cells, 3D printing, robotics, computer models and other technologies to assess the safety and efficacy of a host of chemicals, products, devices and drugs without the suffering and death of literally hundreds of thousands of animals.

'We're confident that with a substantial commitment to assessing scientific validity and prioritizing implementation of such methods we can place new animal testing in the dustbin of history where it belongs.'
