A nuclear-powered icebreaker nearly collided with stunned fishermen in the Russian Arctic.

Footage shows the large vessel, Arktika, smashing through the frozen waters as it advanced towards the angler's tent on April 11.

Reports said a fisherman was sleeping inside the portable shelter, with the video clip seemingly filmed by colleagues in a vehicle parked on the ice.

Locals then honked their horns to alert the ice-crushing craft to the situation, but it eventually sailed straight past the shelter, missing it by mere metres.

Despite the close call, the fishing enthusiast inside the pop-up refuge did not wake up during the incident.

No injuries were reported.
