India: Trapped for hours in iron wire fence, leopard rescued following intense operation
Maharashtra, India - April 13, 2025 A female leopard was trapped in an iron wire fence in a forest area for an extended period. The rescue team arrived swiftly and successfully completed the operation. The incident took place in the field of Yashwant Shelke at Pipeldhara (Survey no. 143) in Butibori forest area, near Samruddhi highway, in Nagpur district, in northern India’s Maharashtra, on April 13. Visuals show a leopard was seen trapped in an iron wire net for a long time, and Forest Department personnel were seen rescuing the leopard. Pramod Wade, Range Forest Officer, Nagpur, Maharashtra, stated that the Forest Department received information from a local farmer around 7:30 am and reached the spot by 8:30 am. The rescue team, comprising 20 members from the Forest Department and the Transit Treatment Centre, carried out the operation within half an hour. No injuries were reported during the rescue. Upon receiving news of the incident, Forest Ranger Pramod Wade immediately alerted senior officials. In response, Assistant Conservator of Forests Manoj Dhanvijay, along with the Butibori range officer, staff, and the rescue team from the Transit Treatment Centre, swiftly arrived at the scene. Using catchpoles, they secured the leopard’s front legs and neck and safely transported her to the Transit Centre for medical care. The female leopard, around three years old, sustained minor injuries and is currently undergoing treatment. If her condition improves, she will be released back into the wild. The operation was carried out under the guidance of Regional Conservator of Forests Laxmi A. and Sub-Conservator Dr. Bharat Handa. Key personnel such as Pramod Wade, P.A. Mate, S.B. Kekan, M.R. Munde, Lonkar, Ajit Ingole, Mahadev Munde, driver Ratnakar Chake, and Prakash Sahare played vital roles in the successful rescue. Thanks to the quick response from the Forest Department, the leopard’s life was saved, preventing a potential disaster.
