A sandstorm in Iraq turned the sky orange and reduced visibility, making travel dangerous and causing widespread disruption.

Footage captured by Ali shows a thick dust cloud blanketing the roads, painting the landscape in an eerie tangerine hue in Nasiriyah on April 14.

Ali said: 'I've never seen a sandstorm like this before.'

Iraq's Health Ministry reported that more than 3,700 individuals have been hospitalised for respiratory issues caused by the freak weather.

The storm has also led to the closure of Basra and Najaf airports.

Health Ministry spokesman Saif al-Badr stated that Basra was the worst-hit province, with more than 1,000 hospital admissions attributed to the storm's effects.

Authorities have advised residents to remain indoors, particularly those with respiratory conditions or other health vulnerabilities.

In 2022, at least one person died, and over 5,000 others were hospitalised in Baghdad due to a similar sandstorm. It is allegedly caused by intensifying droughts, soil degradation, and lower rainfall, believed to be linked to climate change.
