China: China ramps up public health push with plans for more weight management clinics
Storyline: China ramps up public health push with plans for more weight management clinics [Voice_over] China is making a push to set up weight loss centers at hospitals and health care facilities across the country as part of an effort to improve citizens' overall health. According to recently announced plans from the National Health Commission, more weight management clinics will be established to help people lose weight and make healthier lifestyle choices. [Sound_bite] Pei Li, patient: "I gained 22 pounds this year, and neither dieting nor exercise seemed to help. I learned through some channels that the nutrition department here could help with weight loss, so I decided to come and see the doctor." [Voice_over] Hospital and medical professionals say the centers will evaluate a patient's entire physiology, including sleep and exercise habits, and mental health, all of which can affect a person's diet. And then, as one doctor at the hospital explained, when a patient's diet and weight are properly managed, chronic illnesses can be prevented. [Sound_bite] Fei Yunyun, executive deputy director, Health Care Department, Peking Union Medical College Hospital: "Our focus should shift from diagnosing and treating diseases to preventing them and promoting overall health. Weight management is the first step in this process, as it helps reduce the risk of chronic diseases. Our goal is to move from treating illnesses to preventing them." [Voice_over] The latest data from the World Health Organization on global obesity rates shows the percentage of China's population with obesity is roughly 8 percent. By comparison, in the United States, roughly 43 percent of the population is considered obese. [Restrictions : No access Chinese mainland]
