Officials monitor dam on Rough River Lake following Kentucky floods
Officials have been closely monitoring the Rough River Lake Dam following recent floods in Kentucky.
Dam Safety Program Manager Jackie Henn reported that the lake reached spillway elevation with water levels rising to 532 ft (approximately 162.15 m) above mean sea level, after severe rainfall across the region on April 4.
This prompted the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to implement interim risk reduction measures to maintain the dam's integrity until the Phase 2 rehabilitation project is completed.
Aerial footage from April 10 shows strong currents on the waterway.
The heavy rainfall, which resulted in over 15 inches of water, caused elevated lake levels at multiple flood-risk management reservoirs across Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio, raising safety concerns among residents.
To help communities prepare for potential flooding, the Corps has developed an inundation viewer using an interactive map that provides projections for various water levels.
This will allow locals to monitor the flooding and prepare for evacuation if necessary.
Local authorities have reported road closures and are coordinating with neighboring counties to manage the impact of the flooding.
The public is advised to stay informed through official channels and adhere to safety guidelines.
