Chinese crewman killed and 10 missing as sand carrier capsizes
A Chinese crew member was killed and 10 others were missing when a sand carrier capsized off the coast of the Philippines.
The MV Hong Hai 16 was transporting sand when it overturned off Occidental Mindor amid 'moderate sea conditions' on April 15 afternoon.
Dramatic footage shows the vessel flipping over spilling sand into the sea as villagers screamed in shock.
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said it immediately launched search and rescue operations upon receiving a report at 5:20 pm. Rescue personnel arrived at the scene and found the ship with its bottom facing the sky.
Authorities said one Chinese sailor was found dead, while 14 crew members were rescued alive. Ten more people - seven Filipinos and three Chinese - were still missing.
Lieutenant Commander Joseph Coyme, spokesman for the PCG Southern Tagalog District, said: 'We're conducting continuous underwater assessments, diving operations, and hull-cutting procedures to locate and extract any trapped crew members.
'The vessel remains upright but is partially submerged, and we suspect some individuals may still be inside the engine room.'
The MV Hong Hai is owned by Philippine sand and gravel supplier Keen Peak Corporation. It had both Filipino and Chinese crew onboard.
Officials are probing the cause of the incident.
