Palestinian engineer describes brutal torture in Israeli custody: Lost eye and chemical burns after year-long detention
GAZA, PALESTINE - APRIL 17, 2025: Palestinian engineer Mohammad Abu Tawileh has shared disturbing details of the torture he endured during a year-long detention in Israel’s Sde Teiman prison, where he lost one eye and suffered severe chemical burns that have left permanent scars on his body. Abu Tawileh, who was detained during Israeli genocidal war in the Gaza Strip, said he was taken from his home and transported to the Sde Teiman detention center in southern Israel, where he was subjected to prolonged physical and psychological abuse. “They sprayed me with chemicals — chlorine, acid, and air freshener — and then extinguished cigarettes on my body,” he said in an interview with Anadolu. He described being tortured with electric shocks, high-pressure cold water, beatings, and corrosive substances, which he says left visible marks across his body. Medical evaluations after his release confirmed the presence of severe burns and injuries consistent with chemical exposure. Abu Tawileh was tortured by Israelis until the moment of his release. He was stripped naked and forced to walk a long distance in handcuffs before reaching the Karem Abu Salem (Kerem Shalom) crossing. By the time he arrived, his condition was described as extremely critical. Doctors who examined him confirmed he was suffering from extensive burns and trauma and required urgent medical and psychological treatment. His testimony has added to mounting concerns over the treatment of Palestinian detainees at Sde Teiman, a facility that has become increasingly notorious amid reports of systematic abuse. At least 36 Palestinian deaths in custody have been documented at the prison, according to recent reports. A New York Times report published in January stated that Palestinians detained at Sde Teiman were forced to sit silently on the ground for up to 18 hours a day, blindfolded and handcuffed, in an open-air area. Detainees could be held there for up to three months, during which many were subjected to inhumane treatment and violent interrogations.
