GAZA CHRISTIANS ATTENDING EASTER MASSGAZA, PALESTINE - APRIL 20: Despite ongoing Israeli attacks on Gaza, Christians gathered at the historic Church of Saint Porphyrius to celebrate Easter Mass, offering prayers for peace amid the violence. In Gaza, where death and destruction have prevailed for nearly 19 months due to ongoing Israeli attacks, Christians offered prayers for peace on Easter, one of their most important religious holidays symbolizing the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Christians in Gaza called on the international community and world powers to take greater responsibility to help end the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the region as soon as possible. Easter is one of the most important Christian holidays, celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ on the third day after his crucifixion. It is observed on the first Sunday after the full moon following the spring equinox and symbolizes hope and new beginnings. Many people mark Easter with church services, festive meals, and traditions like decorating eggs. In its attacks on the Gaza Strip, Israel has also repeatedly targeted places of worship. The Church of Saint Porphyrius, the oldest church in Gaza and the third oldest in the world, was severely damaged in Israeli strikes. More than 51,200 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza in a brutal Israeli onslaught since October 2023, most of them women and children. The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants last November for Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
