Václav David, seventy-five years old, is unlikely to take the saddle for the first time in 58 years. He is the one who has kept the tradition alive for the last decades. Thanks to him, it has survived the coronavirus pandemic and the associated government measures. Václav David said he is recovering from heart surgery and may not ride again this year. One of the most important German customs in Fulneck (eastern in Czech Republic) is the Easter ceremonial horse rides around the grain (in German Osterreiten, also Kreuzreiten), which is still maintained in Lukavec near Fulnek. This ancient Christian custom from the 17th century is preserved only in Lukavec in the Czech Republic. The Ride Around the Aspen, as the Ride Around the Aspen is also called, starts regularly at 1:00 pm on the Sunday before Easter Monday at the church in Lukavec. The rider at the head of the procession carries a cross with which he blesses families, buildings or fields and future crops. Along the way, the metal cross is venerated by the locals, who in return offer the riders alcohol to warm them up. The riders sing a 15th-century song, Risen from the Dead. On returning to Lukavec, the song Hallelujah, Hail Our Dear Saviour is sung and played.
