Tourist has epic hotel rage meltdown over credit card payment being held
An irate tourist sparked chaos at an upmarket hotel with an extreme meltdown for allegedly being charged twice.
The guest checked into the Holiday Inn in Bangkok, Thailand, on April 17, and a hold was placed on his credit card for payment for three nights.
However, he saw red the next day upon discovering that his relative, who arrived two days earlier, had already paid for his room, and the hold had already been put on her card for their five-night stay, along with his.
Believing that he had been cheated, the father, wearing a 'Greatest Dad Ever' t-shirt and barefoot, confronted the front desk at the Silom branch of the chain.
Astonishing footage shows the holidaymaker raging at the terrified reception staff. He slammed the front desk and repeatedly waved his finger in their face while swearing at them.
'Bloody fools, bloody thieves, bloody rogues,' he shouted, before opening the lobby door and telling passersby not to stay at the hotel.
Shocked fellow guests tried to calm down the furious manchild, but his anger only increased until the police turned up at the Holiday Inn Bangkok Silom by IHG on April 18.
Shocked onlooker Stanley Keh Wei Shang, who was at the hotel lobby when the dispute unfolded, said the Indian man had the fury of hell in his eyes.
Stanley said: 'I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I was really impressed by how calm and respectful the hotel staff remained under extreme pressure. It was a tough moment, and they handled it with a lot of grace.'
The tourist said the dispute appeared to have partly been caused by a miscommunication over which member of the family was paying for the stay.
He added: 'The police came, and after that, they stayed calm. It all started with his relative, the lady in the brown shirt. She arrived first and paid, but then told the staff to collect the payment from the man in the blue shirt when he arrived.
'That's why the staff asked him for the room payment when he checked in. He gave the staff his card, but they didn't charge it, they only verified the amount, which was 14,626 baht.
'After two nights, he claimed that he shouldn't have paid and that the lady in the brown shirt had paid for him. He asked the staff to cancel the payment, which the staff did, but the amount hadn't been returned to his card yet.'
Footage shows the angry tourist from the Sub Continent at the front desk, shouting and banging the desk in front of the terrified staff before police were called.
He screams: 'He has paid it fully. Why did you block my card?'
The visitor waved his hand before the female worker's face, who tried to explain to him, but he kept on interrupting them to yell again.
Other customers nearby tried to intervene, telling the foreigner he was acting inappropriately.
A concerned onlooker can be heard saying: 'He can't be shouting like that. That's not right. He can't be doing that.'
The male receptionist tried to calm him down and said that he was asked to collect the payment from him, but it only made his behaviour worse.
The holidaymaker shouted again: 'But he already paid. Two days ago, he paid the money.'
He flew into an unintelligible rage, speaking in different languages before the women in their family took over.
They asked him to stop as he demanded, 'I want the money now' before speaking with the workers.
He repeatedly cursed at the workers: 'Bloody rogues, bloody thieves, bloody bloody fools. You are the number one bloody rogue.'
The male worker tried to tell the group that the hotel only put a hold on the card for the amount of the deposit.
He also mentioned the room charge, which one of the female guests refused and tried to clarify amid her rowdy relative.
She said: 'This gentleman, he already paid everything. This gentleman paid for four bookings. We came on the 17th.
'He has paid for us as well. Just because we come on a different day, you can't ask for our card and charge again. Do you understand?
'We told you yesterday night, you need not charge us again.'
While the women explained their side, the Indian man walked out to the front of the hotel without any footwear and made a scene.
The male receptionist answered: 'Let me explain to you. Me and my colleague were informed that you will just only pay a deposit. We haven't charged yet.
'We were also informed that the payment for his room will have to be collected from him.'
Instead of making it clear for both parties, it added fuel to the guest's rage.
He said: 'But he has already paid the money. Bloody fool. Bloody fool. We have already paid. Bloody fool.'
The female relative in the brown shirt said: 'I showed him that I have already paid for all four rooms and he gave me the key for his room as well. So in your system, it's supposed to show us paid. Why did you request another card?'
As the two parties could not come to a conclusion, the older female in the Indian family tried to settle.
She said: 'I'll tell you what you have to do. You have done a very, very, very big mistake. Okay? If that's the case, you refund the money. For all our bookings.'
The problematic guest threatened the employees again. He said: 'I already put a bad review on you.'
With the employees being defiant that they only did as they were told, and the Indian family believing they were charged twice, the Thai police were called to the hotel to diffuse the situation. It was settled with the payment being returned and credited back to the account when he checked out.
Speaking today, the manager of the hotel, said the argument was caused by a communication issue.
She said: 'The argument was about the room charges, not a deposit. We don't collect deposits here.
'The woman checked in first and asked us to hold the credit limit on her card for all the rooms in her group. But she also said that once the others arrived and checked in, hotel staff should check with the man again to use his credit card instead, so the charges would go to him.
'When the man arrived, the staff swiped his card to hold the credit limit, and he didn't seem to have any issue at the time.
'Two days later, around 10:30 pm, he started causing a scene as shown in the video, saying the woman should be the one paying, asking why you are charging my credit card?' So we cancelled the hold on his card and used the woman's card instead.
'He just checked out yesterday.'
Indian tourist arrivals to Thailand surged in 2024, surpassing two million visitors and setting a new record. This growth is attributed to visa exemptions, cheaper flights, a rising middle class in India and mass marketing campaigns by the Thai government targeting cities such as Mumbai and Bangalore.
