Argentina: The Argentine Government Declared Seven Days of National Mourning for the Death of Pope Francis
Buenos Aires, Argentina - April 21, 2025 Manuel Adorni, presidential spokesman, announced on social media that the national government, through President Javier Milei, decided to declare seven days of mourning for the death of Pope Francis. “Pope Francis, Jorge Bergoglio, has passed away. Spiritual leader and guide to millions of men and women. The President of the Nation will decree seven days of mourning for the death of the Holy Father. RIP,” Adorni announced on his X (formerly Twitter) profile. During the mourning period, which will last until next Monday, April 28, the Argentine national flag will remain at half-staff on all public buildings. Official events will also be suspended. Previously, the Office of the President reported the death of Jorge Mario Bergoglio, the first Argentine and Latin American pontiff in history: “The Office of the President mourns the passing of Pope Francis, Jorge Mario Bergoglio, who in 2013 became the first Argentine to lead the Catholic Church and guide it with dedication and love from the Vatican.” “The Republic of Argentina, a country with a long Catholic tradition and the birthplace of Pope Francis, deeply mourns the passing of His Holiness and sends its condolences to the Bergoglio family. The President of the Nation stands with all those who profess the Catholic faith and who found in the Supreme Pontiff a spiritual leader in this sad moment,” the official statement added.
