Two hospitalised after police car crashed into another vehicle in Aston, Birmingham
The wreckage of a West Midlands Police car is recovered after it was involved in a crash injuring an officer and a member of public in the Aston area of Birmingham on Tuesday 22 April evening.
Two women who witnessed the crash, but did not want to be named, said: ‘It happened at 8.12pm, the police car crashed into a white Toyota people carrier at the crossroads but the police car didn’t have any lights or sirens on, it was only when he crashed that he turned the lights on.’
A statement by West Midlands Police disputes the fact the police car did not have lights activated saying it was ‘responding to an incident on blue lights’.
The witnesses then described what happened after the collision: ‘The officer got out of the car and started shouting at the member of public who he crashed into the side of.
‘The officer then saw he [the officer himself] was injured and there was blood and he dramatically dropped to the ground.’
Additional police officers arrived in a matter of seconds as the West Midlands Police Central Operations Hub is situated approximately 200 meters away on the same road.
The witnesses continued: ‘Other police came really quick, there must have been about 6 police cars, all the officers went to see the injured policeman, but the member of public who’s car was hit wasn’t attended to by police, we had to take care of him and when one ambulance arrived, it took the police officer.
‘We brought pillows out to the poor Toyota driver.’
According to West Midlands Ambulance service, the first ambulance arrived at 8.20pm and the second at 8.30pm.
The 2023 plate Peugeot 308 police car was driven onto a recovery truck with the front bumper missing and obvious impact damage with both airbags deployed.
The white Toyota vehicle had already been taken from the scene.
A spokesperson for West Midlands Police said: ‘We were called to a collision involving a police car, which was responding to an incident on blue lights, and another vehicle at the junction of Park Lane and Sutton Street, shortly after 8.10pm last night (Tuesday).
‘An officer who was driving the police car and the driver of the other vehicle involved were left with injuries which were not life-threatening.
‘They were given treatment at the scene before being taken to hospital for further care.’
A spokeswoman for West Midlands Ambulance added: ‘We were called to reports of a two car RTC at the junction of Park Lane and Sutton Street, Aston in Birmingham at 8.13pm last night (Tuesday).
‘Two ambulances responded to the scene.
‘Ambulance staff treated two drivers, both men, who had sustained injuries.
‘The two men received treatment on scene before both were conveyed to hospital for further care.’
