The war between Russia and Ukraine has once again highlighted Egypt’s reliance on the two major wheat-exporting nations. According to the government’s “2024–2030 New Presidential Term Economic Strategic Trends Report,” Egypt requires about 7.7 million tons of wheat this year to produce an estimated 93.5 billion loaves of bread. While the country currently holds a five-month strategic wheat reserve, authorities are working to boost supplies amid mounting geopolitical pressures — particularly from the ongoing war in Gaza that began on Oct. 7, 2023.
