SHOTLIST: NEW YORK, US (APR. 23, 2025) (ANADOLU - ACCESS ALL) 1. (SOUNDBITE) (English) ACTIVIST AND ACTOR, JANE FONDA, SAYING: "... I want to start off thanking every one of you in this room. You are the people who are shaping the future of global ocean governance for the coming century. And while you work in these windowless rooms at the United Nations to bring Global Ocean Treaty to life on the water, please remember that there are millions of people all around the world and beautiful creatures in the ocean rooting for all of you. We live in an increasingly divided world where nationalism is on the rise. Trust in institutions is eroding and the idea of global cooperation is being questioned. Against this background, protecting nature from those that prioritize profit can feel impossible. But we cannot ourselves to despair. We can't retreat into our corners. The challenges we face from the climate crisis to the destruction of biodiversity transfer and borders. ... The Global Ocean Treaty is a beacon of hope in these turbulent times. It shows that when we focus on our common humanity and our dependence on a healthy planet, our interdependence with the planet, we can push back against the tide of extraction and corporate greed. The high seas cover half of the planet. They are home to so much beauty and wonder and support every living being, including all of us on this planet. This isn't just about protecting the ocean. It's about protecting ourselves and recognizing the fate of humanity is inextricably linked to the health of the natural world. While you're working here to bring this treaty to life, we need action back in your capitals. You all know that we need at least 60 countries to ratify the treaty this year. To keep the 30 by 30 target alive, getting to 60 ratifications in 2025. It's going to be another truly monumental achievement. But we know, we know it's not easy. We know that. But we also know that without the level of urgency and unexpected global action, unprecedented global action, the target of protecting 30% of the world's oceans is going to slip out of our grasp. So please, please, when you go back to your capitals in the next few days, please remind your ministers of what we're working towards here. Remind them of the political urgency that must be shown, and remind them that we have a chance... We have to keep that progress going. From agreeing to the treaty text two years ago to now seeing ratification flooding in from all over the world. Please, maintain the spirit of cooperation. You've already made history and you can continue making history. Just remember what's at stake. And thank you all for giving me hope. Thank you." NEW YORK, US - APR. 23: Oscar-winning actress Jane Fonda called for an end to fossil fuel subsidies and an accelerated transition to renewable energy at the 'Action for the Planet' event at the Millennium Hotel and United Nations headquarters in New York, US on Wednesday, Apr. 23. Speaking to delegates working on the Global Ocean Treaty, Fonda emphasized the urgent need for international cooperation to protect the planet’s high seas and biodiversity. "You are the people who are shaping the future of global ocean governance for the coming century," Fonda said, praising the efforts of negotiators and urging them not to lose momentum. She described the Global Ocean Treaty as "a beacon of hope in these turbulent times" and reminded attendees that "the fate of humanity is inextricably linked to the health of the natural world." With the goal of protecting 30% of the world's oceans by 2030, Fonda stressed the importance of securing at least 60 country ratifications in 2025. "Without unprecedented global action, the target... is going to slip out of our grasp," she warned. Fonda concluded with an emotional appeal to delegates: "You've already made history and you can continue making history. Just remember what's at stake."
